What Does the Meeting In Jeddah Mean For Ukraine?

— Immediate resumption of military aid and intel sharing. Everything that kills russians and saves the lives of Ukrainians is good.

— It appears we have overcome the crisis in relations with the Trump administration (till the next phase).

— We have demonstrated our commitment to peace.

— We have engaged the Europeans in the process.

— We have placed the return of POWs, detainees, and children on the agenda.

The ball is now in Russia’s court.

Putin may accept the proposal with reservations or counteroffers. He may agree if he:

— needs a pause before launching another assault.

— might also attempt to deceive the Americans, as he skillfully misled the Europeans between 2015 and 2022. Who will monitor an interim ceasefire?

— recognize that Russia’s economy and manpower generation are in dire straits.

— he needs to proceed with a “reset” whatever the cost.

— he fears Trump’s threats of devastating sanctions (I doubt it).

The key indicators are:

— Security Guarantees: is NATO membership for Ukraine genuinely on the table?

— Territorial Integrity: how will the issue of restoring Ukraine's full sovereignty be addressed?

— Military Support: Will the Trump administration commit to significantly strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities (the only deterrent option available for now)?

— Accountability for Russia: do the Americans support prosecuting Russian war criminals and using the frozen assets to make them pay?
